"Education is the bedrock upon which any meaningful and sustainable development is based. It is the key to realization of enhanced growth in any sector of the economy. As a diocese I will be proud if we are able to produce the best brains in the country." - Rt. Rev. Dr. Zakayo Iteba Epusi at his enthronement as the 2nd Bishop of the Katakwa Diocese
Located in Amagoro Kenya in the western part of the country and sponsored through the Anglican Church of Kenya, Katakwa Diocese and patroned by Rt. Rev. Dr. Zakayo I. Epusi, St. Thomas International Teacher Training Centre is devoted to combating the teacher shortage in Western Kenya by training the next generation of specialists and educators. These men and women are committed to investing in society's future and are trained to participate in a global economy through the school's certificates and diploma programs. Upon completion of the program, the certified teachers will have the tools to apply collaborative strategies in instruction, establishing a lifelong model for professional growth and the educational influence on the future of young Kenyans.
In 2003, the Kenyan government abolished school fees for primary schools throughout Kenya. This was a very large step in the country's initiative to allow access to primary school for all citizens. However, the teaching shortage is now a national crisis. Western Kenya has one of the largest teaching shortages in the entire world! Many primary schools and secondary schools have 100 students to a single teacher ratio! An estimated 31,000 primary school teachers are needed and there is a national shortage of 66,000 teachers in all necessary for primary and secondary schools throughout the country.
St. Thomas International Teacher Training Centre is devoted to education at all levels. The TTC is working toward self-sustainability by educating men and women of the Diocese to then teach within the Diocese.
